Webinar Description
Auricular Therapy is a therapeutic interven5on in which stimulation of the auricle (outer surface of the ear) is used to support the management or reduc5on of symptoms in other parts of the body. While this theory was originally based upon the Chinese practice of acupuncture, the somatotopic correspondence of specific parts of the body to specific areas of the ear was first developed in France.
Somatotopy is the point-for-point correspondence of a par5cular region of the body to a specific area of the brain. A brain map of the body exists in neurons on the cerebral cortex, in the thalamus, and in the brain stem. This brain map is similar to the auricular map, exhibi5ng an inverted fetus.
It is this map on the auricle that offers us possibilities that are not found in our work on the feet, and at the same time enhances the phenomenal work that we do through the feet.
Auricular Therapy uses nerve connections. It is a neurological intervention.
The ear is a very concentrated and busy area of nerve endings, and the points on the ears are literally access points in to these nerves, and the central nervous system.
We use our fingers and thumbs to work all surfaces of the ears. We obviously don’t use needles, but we do use Ear Seeds.
Ear Seeds are all the rage at the moment, and for good reason. They are rather phenomenal little tools that offer a powerful support in numerous ways, on the physical, mental, and emo5onal levels. I use them almost every day in my own prac5ce and family. Ear Seeding (Auricular taping) involves affixing a 5ny seed, or small stainless steel, or gold ball bearing, to a specific point on the outer ear.
But this presentation is not about ear seeds. Nope, it’s about the ear itself. With all the hype about ear seeds it is possible that the simplicity, value and power of ‘rubbing’ our ears may have been overshadowed somewhat. Also, not everyone has access to ear seeds.
Karen looks forward to introducing you to this vast and powerful, yet simple and purposeful branch of Reflexology, and sending you home with a specific 8 point protocol to include in your current reflexology practice, because working your ears literally has the potential to ‘rewire your nervous system’ and restore balance.
The protocol in this presentation will focus on general calming and restoring balance.
A focus on assisting the body to shift from a state of Sympathetic Nervous System to a state of Parasympathe5c Nervous System will assist with this calming focus. The Vagus Nerve is key to this shift, and Auricular Therapy is known to be a platform that provides direct access to this nerve (Cranial Nerve X).
Please note: This webinar will be recorded.
About the Presenter
Karen Middleton is a Reflexology Practitioner and Tutor in Auckland, New Zealand. She operates a busy full time reflexology practice, and runs her school, the Auckland School of Reflexology.
She has been a certified Reflexologist and a member of Reflexology New Zealand (RNZ) since 2012. Karen offers Foot, Hand and Ear Reflexology in her sought-after therapy practice, and teaches all three modalities in her School.
Since traveling to teach Ear Reflexology in the UK in 2019 her teaching on this topic has grown in demand, and Karen embraced the online teaching platform in 2020 to offer the opportunity to people all over the world to add this knowledge and modality to their menu of services.
In 2024, she was invited to be one of the presenters at the Reflexology Association of Australia Conference, and in 2025 she was one of the presenters for the Irish Reflexologists Institute in Sligo, Ireland. The year 2025 also saw her teach Ear Reflexology again, in Scotland, Ireland, and England.
Karen attributes the initial rapid start, and continuing growth and expansion of her business over these past 13 years, to the inclusion of all three reflexology platforms in her integrated approach to client care, but in particular the combination of feet and ears.
Her love for the ear work is second only to working on the feet. She looks forward to enthusing you with the ‘power’ of the two tiny reflexology ‘maps’ on either side of your head ….. your EARS!
